I’ve been married for almost seven years. My husband was born in India and came to the United States when he was 18 years old. I was born here. The two of us met while in college, fell in love and then married. We don’t have kids. Now my husband wants a divorce. When I ask him for a reason, he just says we have nothing in common.

I believe that my husband is dealing with other unrelated issues and is unfairly taking it out on our marriage. We’re currently separated. When do I know that it’s time to let him go? Should I hold on and hope that my husband will eventually come around?

Answer

I’m sorry to hear this and I appreciate your thoughtful question. Have you considered working with a marriage and family therapist during this period of separation? If you both are willing to participate in counseling, I would strongly encourage you to do so. You are certainly not alone. There are even therapists who work primarily with couples of South Asian descent. Marital counseling should provide an environment where both you and your husband have the opportunity to openly share your thoughts and feelings with each other. With the assistance of the trained therapist, perhaps you both will be able to work through the issues you are experiencing. Many marriages go through periods of difficulty and emerge stronger and happier than before.

If he is not willing to participate in counseling at all, he may have already concluded that he is no longer interested in continuing the relationship.

In my opinion, once either partner is clearly no longer interested in continuing the relationship, the other partner should honor him or herself by accepting the decision. Whether your husband’s reason for making this decision is that he believes that the two of you have nothing in common or that he may be having issues apart from your marriage, my suggestion to you would be to prioritize your own well-being.

If your husband is not willing to continue working on your relationship, try your best not to spend your energy and time on what may be responsible for his decision. This is easier said than done, especially given the many of us tend to crave closure, but it is worth the considerable effort required to let go. I encourage you, instead, to focus your time and energy on self-healing, including tapping into the energies of your support system.

Best wishes to you during this challenging time.

Feb 17, 2012, New York City: Black, white, red and plenty of metallics dominated the runways at New York’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Fall 2012. Many designers including Badgley Mischka, Carolina Herrera, Diane von Furstenberg, Zang Toi, Monique Lhuillier and others included this strong color palette in their collections. The overall mood was bold and glamorous with plenty of shimmery details. Indian design and designers showed the following.

Rising star Bibhu Mohapatra took a leap this year and did his first runway show at New York Fashion Week, Fall 2012. With more interest stirring around the designer, his show attracted actress Glenn Close and Vogue’s Meredith Melling Burke sitting front row. The collection, inspired by the early 20th-century Chinese opera “The White Haired Girl,” was a collection of eastern-influenced, impeccably tailored daywear and of course, his signature gowns. Bold printed red flowers showed up on pristine white silk dresses with an emphasis on broad shoulders and defined waists. Diamond cut fur coats were shown and the highlight of the show was a black and white fitted gown enhanced with sequin motifs, tulle and feathers.

Naeem Khan is known for dressing the world’s most glamorous women and his Fall 2012 Collection reflected its red-carpet readiness. Starting with the metallic palette of black and shades of white, the collection included gorgeous cigarette pants covered in foil platelets, cocktails dresses nipped in at the waist with full feather skirts, sheer (almost nude) gowns with Chantilly lace and sequins and of course, the expected show stoppers such as a stunning silvery white embroidered gown, a ribbon rosette laced buttery cream gown and a gold sequined, statuesque gown. A black strapless dress accented in mirrors was our personal favorite. Front row included Padma Lakshmi, Matt Damon and wife Luciana Barroso, and Gene Simmons’ wife Shannon Tweed Simmons. The statement jewelry was all by Ranjana Khan.

Falguni & Shane Peacock’s second showing at NYFW proved again this married duo is inspired by all things goth and glam. With form-fitting silhouettes accented in sheer cutout panels, metallic accents, flowing feathers and moody prints, the collection’s front row had Fern Mallis as well as Vixen’s Ashanti, Michelle Williams, and supermodel Petra Nemcova. Thighs and legs were emphasized in gowns with zipper slits and short dresses with sky-high hemlines. Side Note: Did you know that the dancers in Madonna’s Super Bowl XLVI halftime show were dressed by Falguni & Shane Peacock? A great nod for this talented duo.

Perhaps the most “Indian” of all collections was Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel Métiers d’Art show (Pre-Fall 2012 Collection), entitled Paris-Bombay shown late last year in Paris. Not officially part of NYFW, this noteworthy collection included metallic saris, long tunic/dresses over slim pajama-like pants, sherwani-esque jackets and plenty of metallic Indian-inspired accessories such as sequined bags and kolipuri chappal shoes. Coco herself loved Indian jewelry and Lagerfeld’s Jewelry line is a luxurious interpretation of Bombay staples such as headpieces, armlets and necklaces. Make no mistake though, the collection was not about Bollywood kitsch but more about Bombay elegance. A brilliant collection for a growing international, couture-friendly audience.

Each season, HauteItIs scours international runways and handpicks unique, statement pieces from top international designers whose collections are not usually found in mass-brand fashion sites and stores.

“There are many notable designers emerging from countries like India, Sweden or Brazil for example, whose collections are truly inspired,” says Manjari Saha, founder of HauteItIs and head curator of the featured collections. “However, there isn’t any singular place to browse the collections and buy a piece or two if one really wants it. HauteItIs is a centralized catalog of international designers.”

The site’s first collection features leading designers from India including Gaurav Gupta, Morphe, Le Zen, Namrata Joshipura and Malini Ramini, amongst others. HauteItIs’ emphasis is on RTW collections for women with select couture pieces available as custom order. However, what makes HauteItIs unique is the rotating capsule collections designed exclusively for the site, the first being an offering of embroidered structure dresses, jackets and vests by Anamika Khanna, a favorite amongst celebrities including Cindy Crawford, Gisele Bundchen and Lady Gaga.

“We select the collections based on their overall individuality and how it appeals to American women. Each item is a statement piece with impeccable tailoring and details,” adds Manjari. “The site also feature profiles of the presenting designers so shoppers can learn more about the collections they like.”

Shoppers at HauteItIs can expect the utmost in the luxury market. From views on real models, detail close-ups of the clothing and style advice based on occasion to expedited shipping, strong customer service and a liberal return policy, each aspect of HauteItIs has been designed for an exceptional shopping experience.

HauteItIs is headquartered in Boston, MA and adds new designers and their collections on a monthly basis. The company is funded by private investors and its management team are seasoned professionals with backgrounds in business, ecommerce and fashion.

Some people may still know him as Lil Jay, but there is no question that Jay Dabhi, one of New York’s premier DJs, is now all grown up. He’s been DJing for about 20 years first starting with mashing up Bollywood and Bhangra with big dance anthems. Those early mixtapes got him noticed and soon Jay was being flown around the globe to DJ the hottest events. Today, Jay is a regular at one of New York City’s biggest pop radio stations, 92.3 NOW FM. When he’s not mixing live on the radio, you’ll find him DJing at one of the Tri-state’s popular clubs.

How did you get into 92.3 NOW FM? 92.3 NOW FM asked me to do guest mixes for their Memorial Day Weekend mixshows. They heard the mixes and said they were “stellar.” Then I was asked to do mixes for their 4th of July weekend mixshows. Soon after, they opened up a time slot for me on their Saturday Night Dance Factory mixshow where I currently play every week from 3am-4am.

How do you describe your DJ style? My style of mixing is fast paced and energetic. I like to keep the party moving and keep everyone entertained. I “bob and weave” between genres so everyone’s favorite style of music is played within my set. I’m basically a melting pot of different styles ranging from House, Hip Hop to Latin, Bollywood, and Bhangra, to name a few. That influence can also be heard in my music productions as I have produced genre-bending productions of Bhangra with Reggaeton (which I dubbed Bhangraton) to Arabic and House. My dance remix of Nari Nari is in XBOX’s Dance Dance Revolution 3 video game. Being born in the city that’s dubbed a melting pot has also influenced my sound and style. Pakora Pizza, anyone? LOL

What music / artists are you into these days? I’m a big dance music fan so my tastes lie in that realm. Some DJs and producers I dig are Swedish House Mafia, Erick Morillo, Armand Van Helden, Above & Beyond, I can go on and on. Nadia Ali is a favorite dance artist of mine. I’m also a big fan of Adele.

What are your thoughts on the business side of the music industry? There isn’t much money to be made selling music these days. You have to move with the times. I tend to put out a lot of my music for free on the internet. Money is made by writing songs, getting radio airplay and by doing shows. Haven’t you noticed concert ticket and club admission prices are higher than they used to be? You may download for free, but you’ll pay for it elsewhere…lol

What software do you prefer to use? I use turntables, CD players and midi controllers along with DJ programs like Serato and Traktor. For music production, I’m currently using Abelton Live. I’m always up on new technology, incorporating new programs and gear into my sets to keep things fresh and keep me challenged.

Advertised as from the same producers of 300, Immortals is aptly filled with half-naked muscular warriors, beautiful maidens and detailed computer generated scenes of epic battles and wrenching family drama.

Based on Greek mythology, brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his armies are razing all of Greece in search of the invincible Bow of Epirus which has the powers to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and release the titans, long buried in a mountain, waiting to wreck havoc on the world. The only hope for the remaining Greeks is a peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill) who has been secretly trained by Zeus (John Hurt as human, Luke Evans as God). With the help of a gifted Oracle (Frieda Pinto) and a band of slaves (Stephen Dorff, Alan Van Sprang), Theseus manages to win the epic battle with King Hyperion.

Some parts of the movie are cinematically stunning as expected from the visionary Tarsem Singh, but even with his otherworldly masterpieces behind him, The Cell, The Fall, Immortals doesn’t fully live up to his capabilities. The 3D effect is stiff at times and many of landscapes look nothing more spectacular than one would find in the latest video game. The costumes, designed by Eiko Ishioka are genius particularly the masks worn by King Hyperion’s army. Mickey Rourke gives an especially evil performance and Frieda Pinto as Phaedra proves to be a bonafide movie star in the making.

Immortals producer Mark Canton knew they’d found their Phaedra in Pinto. “It was time for her to step up and be a real movie star,” he says. “She’s phenomenal looking. She’s very dedicated and a real professional. She felt like the most natural part of the movie for us. There was no question that we wanted Freida Pinto.”

Pinto’s striking beauty and otherworldly air won Tarsem Singh’s immediate approval. “Phaedra needed to be exotic compared to most of the people in her world,” says Singh. “People might expect that because it’s a Greek film, she would be Greek, but that’s not what I envisioned. When I met Freida I just said, she’s it.”

Pinto had been a fan of Singh’s since seeing his 2006 fantasy, The Fall. “I was impressed by the way it appealed to all the senses,” she says. “I thought this film had the potential to do the same. When I first met him, I did not know what to expect. He explained the reason behind doing this film, what he expected the film to look like, and what was expected of me and the other actors. It all sounded larger-than-life and fantastical. I really wanted to be part of it.” For her first big studio film Pinto says she feels lucky to have had Singh to guide her. “Tarsem is one of the most encouraging directors you will ever meet,” she says. “Working on a big-budget project like this, time is literally money, but he was always patient and open to suggestions. When you work on a film like this, the emotions that you go through are so explosive. I’m just so excited, and that’s exactly what I want the audience to feel.”

The journey started back in April with Indian composers Salim-Sulaiman producing a remix of Gaga’s smash, “Born This Way” for the very lucrative South Asian market.

She followed up the success with an October trip that had her cozying up to the likes of Shah Rukh Khan for a one-on-one interview that will be aired on Indian TV later this month. The flamboyant star also gifted King Khan’s daughter Suhana, her sunglasses to which SRK tweeted, “Lady Gaga is all heart and soul. Gave me her glasses for my daughter. yippeee..brownie points unlimited.”

At a Formula One Grand Prix afterparty held at Arjun Rampal’s Lap Bar, Gaga performed an Indian fusion version of her Born This Way single, “Marry the Night,” in a demure white dress accented with a phallic-looking microphone.

Gaga’s visit included a press conference at the Taj Mansingh Hotel, New Delhi, where she wore a Naeem Khan gown with her hair dyed to match the colors of the Indian flag. Later she shopped at local markets and included a stop to an orphanage for HIV-positive children, dressed, well, rather normal.

A few days later, at the recent MTV European Music Awards, Gaga’s outlandish flying saucer outfit was designed by Manish Arora for Paco Rabanne where he has recently been named Creative Director.

The popstar also wore a metallic Manish Arora for Paco Rabanne dressed accessorized with an armful of MTV EMA gong awards.

She signed off her India trip by tweeting, ‘Screw Hollywood. It’s all about Bollywood.’ We couldn’t agree more.

<img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1316" title="Jasbina the Matchmaker: When Will Love Happen?
I’m fortunate to have a great family, good friends, and a successful career. I feel like I’m in a good place, except that I’m missing a partner with whom I can share my life. While my parents would like me to be proactive in searching for a mate, I hear from others that I’ll eventually meet my special someone. What do you think?

Answer

If you felt something missing in any other arena of your life, would you just sit back and wait for it to happen, or be proactive? Is your love life any less worthy of your time and energy?

As a first step, look internally before looking externally. Identify your must-haves and deal-breakers.

Differentiate between essential needs on the one hand, and non-essential wants/preferences on the other. Critically evaluate the underlying basis of each need:

Past relationships or experiences

Values, priorities

Others’ expectations and/or stereotypes?

Given each need likely narrows your pool of potentials, make sure each need is truly essential (so you do not risk missing out on potential partners with whom you could very well be happy). Do the same for your deal-breakers. While this self-evaluative process may seem involved, it will likely save you time, energy, and heartbreak, in the future.

Then it’s time to look externally:

Have you told everyone in your life that you’d be happy to meet any good eligible singles?

Apart from one-on-one introductions, having a party with friends where all the guests show up with a platonic friend/ex is a great way to expand your universe of potentials.

Are you going to singles events, or participating in activities that are likely to have singles in attendance?

Are you dating online?

Is your online search effective or half-hearted?

If you are posting a photo, is it an accurate representation of the best version of yourself?

Is your profile thoughtful and inviting?

Are you meeting potentials in-person instead of getting caught up in endless email/phone/text communications?

Are you making snap judgments on first dates, or truly allowing yourself to get to know your date with an open-mind?

Have you considered hiring a matchmaker/dating coach if your time is limited and you’d like to be as strategic as possible?

As in all other areas of life, endeavor to align your actions and efforts with your values and goals. If you truly place a high value on your love life, take action accordingly.

The 2-day festival saw over 1,200 people attending this year’s Film Festival, Gala, and associated Leadership Summit. This ever-growing support from the community validates the role that The Sikh Art and Film Foundation plays as a catalyst for the dissemination and discussion of Sikh Arts and Culture.

This year, the films ‘Canadian Soldier Sikhs’ and ‘The Ulysses’ shared the award for Best Documentary. ‘Jagjeet’ received the award for Best Short Film.

‘Canadian Soldiers Sikhs’ is director David Gray’s chronicle of ten Sikh men in the Canadian army struggling through enlistment, training, and service. ‘The Ulysses’ tells the story of 57 Punjabi Indian immigrants awaiting their fate in a shanty community they’ve built to avoid deportation by directors Alberto Garcia Ortiz and Agatha Maciaszek. ‘Jagjeet’ is director Kanwaljit Singh’s examination of the 1984 Delhi riots’ impact on two best friends.

Chief Guest, Her Excellency Preneet Kaur, Minister of State for External Affairs, India handed out the annual Sikh Heritage Awards this year. Recipients of this year’s honors were Gurinder Chadha, Filmmaker (‘Bend It Like Beckham’, ‘It’s a Wonderful Afterlife’) for Art; Jaspal Bindra (CEO Standard Chartered Bank Asia) for Leadership; and Hon. Navtej Sarna (India’s Ambassador to Israel) for Vision. Along with the filmmakers, award recipients and Sikh Art and Film Foundation leaders, guests included the Hon. Tarlochan Singh (Former Member of Parliament and Chairman Minorities Commission India), Hon. Thomas DiNapoli (New York State Comptroller), Hon. Carol A. Robles-Roman (Deputy Mayor for Legal Affairs, NYC), Hon. Manjeev Puri (India`s Deputy Permanent Representative to UN), Hon. Arlene Gonzalez-Sanchez (Commissioner of NY State), Hon. Jon Kaiman (Supervisor, Town of Hempstead), Michael Miller (CEO Jewish Community Relations Council), and Stuart Rabinowitz (President Hofstra University).

The celebrations were held at Cipriani, 55 Wall Street, where a grand gala concluded the 8th annual Sikh Film Festival. The festivities were capped off with a performance from The Prince of Bhangra, Sukhbir, and a set from DJ Kucha that brought everyone together on the dance floor.

The Sikh International Film Festival was founded in 2003 to espouse awareness and pride in the diversity, culture and history of the Sikhs. Winning films in the categories of Best Short Film and Best Documentary are recognized with cash prizes. In addition to the cash prizes, the Sikh Arts Foundation further supports the work of filmmakers and rewards festival award-winners with fully-funded screenings and discussion panels.

In the third installment of the Harold and Kumar series, “A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas,” the duo is back in a smoke-filled haze of a 3D adventure.

The movie begins six years after Guantanamo and the best friends are now estranged as Kumar continues to live a weed-filled existence while Harold has married his girlfriend from series two, Maria (Paula Gracés), and has moved into a house in the suburbs. While Harold is fervently trying to please his father-in-law with a perfect Christmas, Kumar receives a mysterious package at his apartment postmarked for Harold.

Kumar decides to deliver the package to Harold with the help of his friend Adrian (Amir Blumenfeld) who has his own mission of deflowering a girl he has met on the internet. In the hilarious events that follow, Harold burns down his father-in-law’s prized Christmas tree, the duo end up being chased by Russian gangsters, Santa gets shot and a baby gets completely stoned off of weed, cocaine and ecstasy, and that’s just the beginning.

Of course, Neil Patrick Harris makes his over-the-top cameo and the movie, filmed in 3D, is a must-see for the holiday season. Filled with amazing effects filmed brilliantly in 3D, director Todd Strauss-Schulson takes the genre and the series to a whole new level. “A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas” is inadvertently timely with references to current event, hilarious with its HIGH jinks, and appropriately so wrong for the holiday season…and that’s the very reason why we love it! Our recommendation, drop that wrapping paper and go see the movie as soon as you can!

Located in the Sunset Park area of Brooklyn, Hotel BPM (Beats per Minute) is the brainchild of DJ Bijal, aka Mr. Everywhere. The twenty-something is best known for his own syndicated radio show on Sirius Satellite Radio and the numerous mix tapes he has released over the years. Now this visionary is ready to take his brand to the next level.

“I was thinking to myself one day, how else can I expand my brand even further?” says DJ Bijal who’s been djing since he was in middle school. “I’m always in and out of hotels because I travel for my djing, so I thought, I would love to have a hotel that has everything I love. A hotel that was like made just for me.” And so he did.

Dj Bijal has been involved in every aspect of the boutique hotel including designing the furniture that will outfit the rooms. Each room is expected to have modern platform beds with custom BPM brand mattresses, nightstands and dressers. Keurig coffeemakers and energy-saving light sensors are also standard as are the Gilchrist & Soames Beekind bath products, HDTVs, Porcelanosa marble showers, free Wifi and full soundproofing.

To add to the music-inspired concept and to keep within the DJ Bijal brand, each month the DJ will personally compile an atmosphere-centric playlist that will stream throughout the hotel from the public spaces all the way to the bathrooms. Guests have the luxury of requesting specific songs through the hotel’s website and Facebook. The hotel will also carry a wide selection of music magazines.

The hotel is planning a lounge with a cool, sexy vibe that will serve drinks and light fare while the rooftop is slated for larger parties and private events.

“This hotel is a lifestyle hotel and I expect it be an overall brand where, down the line, we can expand though our own annual events, like a BPM concert every year under the Brooklyn Bridge, to hosting music workshops and being a popular place for entities like Fuse or MTV to hold events. I want it to be a social hub for all things music.”

And the music community is already taking notice with people like New York’s HOT 97 DJ Enuff already putting in a booking as a hotel guest. DJ Bijal and his team are currently in the midst of planning a celebrity-packed launch party as the opening date inches closer.

Hotel rates are slated to be $189 per night with advanced booking rates at a smooth $139 in honor of the property’s street address. With the building of the new Barclay’s Center (the future home of the Brooklyn Nets) nearby, and easy access to many subway lines, we think Dj Bijal may just have a “Hit” on his hands.

After a riveting role in 7 Khoon Maaf, John Abraham, one of Bollywood’s most sexiest actors, is back with a new movie and a glistening new bod.

Force is a romantic, action film that revolves around Yashvardhan (John Abraham) who is a hard-headed senior narcotics officer who doesn’t play by the book, but always ensures that justice is served. He believes that the only way to eradicate crime is to give criminals the bullet, not handcuffs. In the midst of his most dangerous and significant operation to crack down on India’s drug cartels, Yashvardhan encounters a ruthless enemy who will stop at nothing until he gets his revenge for the damage done to his business by the narcotics team. He also meets the free-spirited Maya (Genelia D’Souza), whose love pushes him to make a choice between the life he already knows and the life he could have with her. Yashvardhan’s decision to let happiness and normalcy into his life changes his life forever.

Force releases worldwide on September 30.

Cast: John Abraham and Genelia D’Souza
Director: Nishikant Kamat
Producer: Vipul Amrutlal Shah

Official Site: http://www.forcethemovie.com/

You’ve come a long way since your first movie in Jism (2003) to Force today (2011). Please describe your journey?

However clichéd this may sound, each day is really a new day with a range of experiences, ups and downs, high and lows – it’s life. But you’ve just got to keep going and with the grace of God, I’m still here and revving to go even further. I have given my level best to my profession and will keep doing so. My family and fans are my biggest inspiration and I will continue to aspire to meet their expectations. At the end of the day, I have grown as an actor, which is a big achievement for me.

Your jaw dropping eight-pack physique is the talk of the town. What tips can you offer (mainly our male readers) on how to achieve the perfect abs?

Well, a lot of hard work went into preparing for this role as my character required a very rough and tough look. I went through eight strenuous months of rigorous training to build the eight pack and look sturdy. But more than anything else I had to feel stronger and be prepared for some serious action. I am quite particular about my fitness regime which is quite simple–eat healthy and exercise well!

How does it feel to be approached by Hollywood’s ace stunt director JJ Perry, who trained Sylvester Stallone, to offer to train you?

It’s been an absolute honor to get such encouraging comments from a Global Stunt Icon himself! Mr Perry’s compliments have motivated me all the more.

When shooting action movies there are always accidents or incidents on set. Were there any for you whilst filming Force?

Force is a very high action-packed film, hence it requires a lot of stunts. Although we took great precautions, some accidents did happen. I recall there was the stunt that required me to jump from one moving goods train locomotive to another. Instead of landing on my feet I lost my balance and fell on my back over a heap of stones. I remember I had 40 injury marks on my back! And then there are a few others–this has been a film where I’ve endured the most injuries but it was certainly worth it.

You’ve been paired opposite Genelia D’Souza for the first time we believe. When you are working with an actor for the first time (especially if she is playing your love interest), how do you break the ice? What was your first interaction with Genelia like?

Genelia is so full of life–she brings so much energy on the sets; it’s amazing to work with someone like her. At the same time, she is a thorough professional. I had the most wonderful time working with her and look forward to the opportunity again. I think we make a great onscreen couple.

Would you class Force among a contemporary genre of Indian films?

Force belongs to the classic/action/romance genre, but with some unique, state of the art action sequences, topped with some extremely exciting music. It is also a very engaging narrative and plot line with a strong romantic undertone set in today’s times. I am positive that audiences across the globe would enjoy and appreciate this movie as it has something for everyone–from hardcore action to high tension drama and a beautiful romance.

And finally, do you have a special message for your fans?

Thank you all so, so much for supporting me, encouraging me and wishing me well. Your love, affection and belief in me, is a big reason for where I am today and continuing to take my career to the next level. Please go watch Force. I am sure you will all enjoy it!

It’s time to pull out those saris and scarves…it looks like the Spring/Summer 2012 fashion season will be filled with global influences in vibrant, electric colors! Mixing culture with cool, several designers at New York Fashion Week grabbed inspiration from the constant multicultural influences around us. From the Haitian-inspired geometry at Donna Karan, to Egyptian exploration from Elie Tahari, a global mindset—and may we add “gilded” as gold was a strong steady)– was definitely a prevalent theme.

Thakoon

Of course, India, with its luscious textiles, also found its way onto the runways, most interestingly enough, with Thakoon Panichgul who married the exoticism of Bollywood with the rough and rugged American West. It was a collection to be seen: vivid colors of saffron, turquoise, orange and gold electrified silhouettes such as yoked western shirts, long, flowy skirts, short layered skirts and peplum blouses over shorts. Rich paisley prints, metallic borders on both pants and skirts and draped diaphanous scarves draped over the shoulder sari-style added a punch of Bollywood. Overall, the collection had all-around cool vibe and a very unique point of view.

Rachel Roy

Over at Rachel Roy, colonial era Vietnam (circs 1920-1930’s) inspired black and white dressing that borrowed heavily from schoolboy style. Asian floral prints danced around slouchy pajama pants worn under relaxed jackets while rich silks and hints of deep orange color brought the collection together.

Sachin + Babi

Sachin + Babi, headed by the design duo Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia, is bringing youthful playfulness in their normally restrained line. With the success of color from its last showing, SS2012 also brought a strong smattering of coral, yellow and navy accents. The cuts, though a bit boxy, gave a hipster appeal to the tailored collection.

Naeem Khan

At Naeem Khan, the three words printed on the show’s program were: colorful, racy and glamour, and judging by the standing ovation the designer received at the end, his followers were impressed. This collection was inspired by famed costume designer Edith Head and Ava Gardner, circa The Barefoot Contessa. Fluid caftans, scratched-feather beaded gowns, ostrich feather skirts, jersey dresses mixed with unexpected fabrics and beading, these were some of the offerings at this show. Hemlines ranged from short cocktail to sweeping-the-floor black tie. Ranjana Khan’s bold jewelry accompanied the collection. With the front row lined with the likes of Mischa Barton and Rachel Roy, there is little doubt that the collection will soon be seen on some red carpet very quickly.

Bibhu Mohapatra

Bibhu Mohapatra found inspiration in Helmut Newton’s erotically charge black and white photographs that have been a mainstay at publications like Vogue. Chain link prints and laser cut silhouettes hinted at Newton’s bondage fetish while well-tailored circular jackets topped long, wide legged trousers. Mohapatra’s use of nudes, sheers and body conscious cuts lent itself to a strong, sensual vibe.

Falguni + Shane Peacock

It was all rock and roll over at Falguni & Shane Peacock where the designer duo, true to form, presented a collection cohesive in its many juxtapositions. From leather striped dressed, to sheer fabrics mixed with bold prints and FSP’s signature feathers, the collection consists of dresses that stand alone, loud and proud. Military accents were found in strong shoulders, officer’s stripes and leather harnesses, while statuesque jersey dresses were a fabulous study in the unexpected mix of materials. Joan Rivers sat in the front row and the show closed with upcoming pop/heavy metal singer Porcelain Black, whose latest single, “This is What Rock and Roll Looks Like,” accurately summed up the show.

Question: I met a guy last year, online. While we seemed to have little in common, he expressed interest and I responded. After communicating via email and phone for a couple weeks, we met in-person. While meeting didn’t change my initial impression regarding having little in common, it was an enjoyable evening and I did feel attracted to him. During the next several months, we continued seeing each other, and the intensity of my reservations about the potential of a long-term relationship with him increased the more our differences were revealed. Given at this point I really don’t see any long-term potential, I decided to continue my online dating efforts. Since I’m looking for a significant other, do you see any harm in the two of us continuing to see one another (I do enjoy his company)

Jasbina’s Answer: Generally speaking, in the very early stages of getting-acquainted prior to both people agreeing to be in an exclusive relationship, I see no harm in getting acquainted with multiple people at the same time. In fact, I believe doing so may be beneficial in that it lessens pressure at the early stages of getting acquainted and allows one to figure out what is most important and compatible in a relationship/life partner.

That said, in this case it appears that after several months you believe that no long-term potential exists with the guy you mention. Since you enjoy his company, it is worth taking some time to consider whether your belief of no long-term potential is well founded. Are the differences between the two of you fundamental, ie incompatible worldviews, life goals, values, priorities, emotional make-ups, ways of thinking and being?

If so, I do see potential opportunity costs in continuing to see each other.

Continuing to see a guy whose company you enjoy, but who you’ve determined has no real long-term potential for you can be a convenient source of comfort, BUT, and this is a big but, that convenience and comfort oftentimes comes at an extremely high cost. What’s the cost? The greatest cost which comes to mind is debilitating distraction from developing intimacy with a prospective partner with long-term potential. Instead of developing a close relationship with a long-term partner, a person may let precious time pass in the convenient and comfortable company of a guy whose company you enjoy thereby missing opportunities with Mr Right. If you find yourself in such a situation, ask yourself: while you’re investing your time, energy and potential emotion on a guy with whom there is just no long-term potential, who might you be completely missing out on?

Director: Siddique
Cast: Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor
Cinematographer: Sejal Shah
Music Directors: Himesh Reshammiya and Pritam
Official Site: www.bodyguardthefilm.com

In all of our years watching Bollywood flicks, we find that Salman Khan/Kareena Kapoor’s newest action vehicle, BodyGuard, has found a niche for itself as true Bollywood Kitsch. The storyline is somewhat predictable, boy is sent to protect girl, girl falls in love, girl pursues boy, boy is clueless and in the end, after much drama, boy and girl get married. However, what makes this movie truly outstanding is that it styled in the surreal manner of superhero comic books. The vivid cinematography and the well choreographed fight scenes complete with stop action camera work (Sin City meets The Matrix) make this film unique while the effervescent dance numbers add to the refulgent over-the-top-ness that make Bollywood movies fabulous! It’s a must see!

Bodyguard opened worldwide on Aug.31, 2011.

Salman Khan, the male lead in Bodyguard, is just as known for his body as he is for his roles. Here, Salman gives us insight into his current projects.

After Wanted (2009) and Dabangg (2010), will Bodyguard be your third consecutive Eid blockbuster?
Let the Wednesday the film releases decide that. Everyone wants to make a film that will surpass their last films. I’m no different. And today, we have the technical know-how to up the standards but we still haven’t discovered a hit formula. So, all you can do is make a good, sensible, emotional film and leave it at that.

But the expectations from ‘Brand Salman’ have risen?
Expectations are high because people have watched my last few films. But it’s true in other cases too. For example, you always expect a little more from your girlfriend and vice versa (smiles).

Your last two films with Kareena Kapoor, Kyun Ki! (2005) and Main Aur Mrs Khanna (2009) didn’t work. Will this one break the jinx?
In our film industry, certain people dismiss an on-screen pairing as panvati (jinxed) if their last few films haven’t worked at the box office. But I believe that if a heroine is perfectly suited for a particular role, why shouldn’t I get her? In Wanted, we cast Ayesha Takia in the lead because she fit the part. And the film was a superhit!

Is Katrina Kaif doing a cameo in Bodyguard or a special appearance in the title track?
I start out as her bodyguard so she appears in the title song, Aaya Re Aaya… to establish the fact. Later, of course, I become Kareena’s bodyguard.

Is Bodyguard a special film for you since your sister Alvira is co-producing it with husband Atul Agnihotri?
It doesn’t matter who is producing the film. A film is a film. People are going to spend money, from Rs 10 to Rs 400, to watch it. So, my responsibility is towards them. Once audiences like the film and they start coming in numbers, my responsibility towards the producer will be automatically fulfilled.

How is Dabangg 2 shaping up? Have you really written parts of the script?
Dabangg 2 is simply an extension of the first film. Chulbul Pandey is an interesting guy so I think we won’t have any problems with the character. In fact, we have finalized and locked the script of the sequel. I haven’t written anything in the script since it’s completely Arbaaz’s (Khan) film. Since Chulbul has shades of gray, it’s easily to meander into different genres — comedy, action and romance. Now that the character of Chulbul is established, we can easily take it to the next level.

We’ve heard that Chulbul is moving to a metro now?
Yes, Chulbul is moving to a bigger city. (Smiles) Now, there’s a lot more jhol in Dabangg 2.

Many feel you seem to be stuck on action films these days?
Nothing like that, every film has action, even Ready. For instance, you can’t call every film a musical just because it has 4-5 songs. In fact, I had to work harder on Ready because the action scenes had to make you laugh.

Have you lost weight for Ek Tha Tiger?
No, it’s just that I was training hard for the climax of Bodyguard and carried the lean look into Ek Tha Tiger.

You met Somy Ali recently in Bangkok while shooting for Ready?
Sure, I did. She flew down to Bangkok from Hong Kong because she had some work in Hong Kong. What’s the big deal?

Somy has said that Aishwarya Rai was responsible for your split?
(Smiles) Somy said it, so ask her. I don’t know anything.

Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, and Deepika Padukone star in the upcoming political drama Aarakshan from award-winning director Prakash Jha (Raajneeti, Gangaajal).

Aarakshan is the story of Prabhakar Anand (Bachchan), an idealistic principal of a college who has single-handedly turned the school into the state’s best. It is also the story of his loyal disciple, Deepak Kumar (Saif Ali Khan) who will do anything for his Sir. Deepak is also, coincidently, in love with Prabhakar’s daughter, played by Deepika. Aarakshan encapsulates love, friendship, life and dreams, all of which get tested during the course of the film. Centered on one of India’s most controversial issues of recent years, reservation, the quota system that requires 49.5% of college admission seats be reserved for students from the lower castes as mandated by the Supreme Court, the story is a rollercoaster ride of high drama, conflict, and rebellion. A formulaic Bollywood flick perfect for summer and just days ahead of India’s Independence Day, Aarakshan opens in theaters worldwide on August 12th, 2011.

Deepika Padukone, a former model and now an actress, is best known for her 2007 Bollywood debut in Farah Khan’s blockbuster Om Shanti Om with Shahrukh Khan. In Aarakshan, Deepika plays Amitabh Bachchan’s daughter and Saif Ali Khan’s love interest. However, despite being cast alongside Bollywood heavy hitters, one of her side accomplishments in the film was mastering the art of making round rotis for a song sequence.

Not knowing that the sequence involved her ‘actually’ making a roti, she froze on being presented with loose flour. With the whole unit waiting for her to do the action, Deepika just stood there. As with most girls’ first attempts of making the simple roti, Deepika’s also came out in abstract shapes, sizes and maps of unknown countries. Seeing her comical trials and her gradually getting covered in white flour, Saif apparently came to her rescue with not much success. Finally Prakash Jha came up with an innovative shortcut to a perfectly round roti.

Prakash Jha commented, “It was nothing major. Deepika was pretty comfortable in the kitchen. I just helped her a little bit.” Saif added, “It was interestingly funny, reminded me of the scene in Kaalia, where Amitji helps Parveen Babiji to make an egg. (laughs) Thank God it wasn’t an egg for Deepika.” Deepika commented, “I was so embarrassed, I can totally cook, but roti is a challenge. As with life the most simplest of things sometimes get to be a hardest to master.”

Here, Deepika gives insight in Aarakshan.

Tell us about the film and the character you play? The film is based on one if the most controversial policies of caste-ism and reservation system in government and the education system in India. Amitabh Bachchan plays the legendary and idealistic college principal and he has single-handedly turned his college into the state’s best. I play the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s daughter, Poorbi Anand, who is also Saif Ali Khan’s love interest in the film. Poorbi’s personality and persona are shaped by the relationships in her life – her daughter, a girlfriend, a friend and a student. In essence, the film is about the impact that the issue of reservation has on a multitude of relationships and how this tests each of them.

What was it like working with Mr Bachchan for the first time? I have always been in absolute awe of him so to work with him first hand is a memory I will cherish for my entire life. It was incredibly nerve racking at first, but he is a very humble and kind human being and I got to learn so much from him. He is a true legend for me.

And what about working with Saif Ali Khan for the second time? It is always a pleasure working with Saif. We have a great familiarity and a great comfort level when we are working which always help when you are starting new projects and especially on something as intense as this.

What attracted you to the film? Everything really, from the subject matter of the film, my role and of course, the opportunity to work with such a formidable cast and crew. When choosing a film, I always have to feel a connection with it, something I would like to be part of and Aarakshan had all of this for me and more.

Who will the film appeal to? The film is in essence a drama that will appeal to the masses – you have the romance, youthfulness, intense (family) drama, entertainment and so forth. From an India perspective, every student and family member would be able to empathize with the characters and connect to the film either they or someone they know have experienced discrimination. Having said that, I think there is a huge global appeal, especially in the western part of the world, whether UK/USA as the common man wherever they may be has been exposed to the issue of reservation and discrimination.

Title: AARAKSHAN (“Reservation”)

Director: Prakash Jha

Have you ever watched a play and instinctually realized that you “knew” every character in the plot? That’s what happened to me when I went to see Aizzah Fatima’s Dirty Paki Lingerie. A one-woman show centered on the lives of six Pakistani, Muslim women, Dirty Paki Lingerie is an intimate revelation on what it really is to live straddling two very different cultures.

The play, which has been developed and directed by Erica Gould and stars Aizzah Fatima, begins with Aizzah as the idealistic poet longing to have a house of her own. Wearing an indiscernible black outfit, Aizzah morphs between characters with the brilliant prop of a singular, emerald green, silk veil. Whether playing the Pakistani-American girl good for a fling, but not marriage or the immigrant mother combing the matrimonials trying to find a suitor for her daughter, the veil acts as a conduit for its character’s personality while its inherent symbolism of Muslim identity, and in some causes oppression, remains ever present.

Erica says, “The use of a veil was something Aizzah was already thinking about before we started working together, as a possible way to distinguish the characters. But from a directorial/design perspective, I wanted a single, simple, visually striking element that, through the transformation of its use, could, by itself, tell the story visually, practically, and metaphorically. The “veil” is such a potent symbol and signifier, both for the audience and for the women in the play who use it and relate to it in different ways–it truly reflects how they see themselves in relation to their religion (or lack thereof), their culture, and their sexuality, which is so much of what the play is about.”

Quite funny interlaced with several poignant moments, Dirty Paki Lingerie uses the framework of interpersonal relationships as the lens in which to addresses many of the concerns that immigrant and second-generation women usually encounter. Whether it is the young Pakistani girl arrived fresh in America looking for a handsome doctor to marry, or the betrothed feminist Muslim hoping her best friend can attend her wedding even though her husband-to-be has forbade it, it is undoubtedly the final presentation of Lubna, a 50-year-old soon-to-be divorced wife that causes tears to drop. As she explains how she sacrificed her life for her marriage and children in a café conversation with her college-age daughter, Lubna’s quiet inner strength comes through as she finally decides to live her own life and the audience is met with the summation of the play: that could’ve been me, is me, was me, or will be me.

A must-see, Dirty Paki Lingerie just finished showing at the Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex as part of the Midtown International Theatre Festival in New York City. Check the website for future dates.

www.dirtypakilingerie.com

Aizzah Fatima, the author of Dirty Paki Lingerie is a talented writer/actress who currently lives in New York City. It seems that her diverse background has given her unique insight into different cultures. Having grown up in Saudi Arabia and Mississipi, and having worked as a teacher, microbiologist and at Google, Aizzah uses her unique perspective to give life to each one of her characters. The writer/actress has performed in a number of media including theater, movies, television and a web series called Landing in Mumbai, which she also co-produces. She is a graduate of the two-year conservatory at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in addition to holding a Bachelors in Microbiology and a Masters in MIS.

Erica Gould, the play’s director, is no stranger to thought-provoking theater. Her directing credits include the world premiere production of Neil LaBute’s Autobahn and the premiere of LaBute’s one-act, Stand Up, w/ Mos Def. She also adds What Light From Darkness Grows (NPR, w/ Phylicia Rashad, Harry Lennix – Golden Reel and Gracie Allen Awards) as well as Shakespeare’s As You Like It amongst many others. Erica has taught Shakespeare, Voice and Movement, Mask, stage combat, and Classical theatre for institutions including Yale, NYU, Fordham, Pace, SVA, and the O’Neill National Theatre Institute.

Aizzah, what inspired you to write this play? When I started writing this play, it occurred to me that there was a lot I wanted to say about being Muslim-American. I woke up one day shocked to realize that parts of the country I call home had developed virulent Islamophobic sentiment. A country that was founded on freedom of religion now had organized opposition and violent acts beings committed to prevent the building of mosques. Most shocking was when it hit home—I’m referring to the furor about the Park 51 community center and Mosque in downtown NYC. This show was born out of the current climate we live in America and to show realistic portrayals of American Muslims. In fact, I hope the audience comes away with the impression that there is nothing contradictory about being a Muslim-American or a Pakistani-American.

Are the characters based on people you know, or are they an amalgamation of people in your life? The play is based on real people and events. I knew all these women who are Pakistani-American, and I thought they each had an amazing story. Some of them are people I’m very close to, and others are stories of people I had the pleasure of meeting briefly. I wanted to explore how women from this particular background straddle two cultures that can be viewed as contradictory by some. I wanted to give a voice to these women, and share their stories. A larger goal was to portray realistic images of Pakistanis and Muslims because in recent years we have seen a lot of negative depictions of people from this cultural background. I wanted to show people how similar we all are on a human level despite some superficial differences.

How do you feel about its reception? It’s been amazing, and the interest in the play has been beyond anything I ever imagined. People from all walks of life connect with the characters in the play. When I first started writing this play, my goal was to inform those audience members who did not know much about the Pakistani-American community. This play has in fact been very popular amongst the Pakistani-American community as well as others. I recently had an older Japanese-American couple tell me that a lot of the issues I touched on in the play were very similar to what they also deal with. I have had Pakistani women tell me how touched they were by the stories, and they saw glimpses of themselves in my characters. I had an African-American woman from the Bronx tell me that the mother who is trying to set up her daughter’s marriage reminds her a lot of her mom. This woman was not even Muslim. I wanted to create very specific characters, but in doing so, I’ve created characters with universal appeal. These characters resonate with audiences of various backgrounds.

Erica, where do you want to see this play go? I would like to reach a wider audience in NYC, both within the theater-going community (through an extended run in a larger house–commercial Off-Broadway, or in partnership with one of the city’s non-for-profit residential theater institutions), as well as amongst those who are not necessarily regular theater-goers (through community-based venues that are more “off-the-radar”). I’d also like to take the piece outside NYC–to university campuses, regional theaters, perhaps, and to communities with and without substantial Muslim populations.

I think the important thing is for the piece to be seen both by people for whom it would resonate, and by those for whom it might represent a different way of looking at things, or for whom it might encourage seeing something familiar in a new way. I think it is important for cultures that are underrepresented, or not represented three-dimensionally, in mainstream arts and media to be given a voice, and for people of that culture to see themselves being seen and heard; but I think it is equally, and perhaps even more important, to give people who are outside that particular cultural/religious community an opportunity to see themselves and their own personal, emotional experiences reflected in the stories of a different culture. I think that is a very positive and powerful tool for change–in terms of transcending prejudice and fears of difference, and it is one of the more important things a work of theater can uniquely do–provided it is simultaneously deeply specific, as well as universal, in its presentation of human experience. And that it is entertaining.

The social music app is dramatically changing the way fans of South Asian music access, listen to and share their favorite tracks. With a catalogue of Bollywood, Bhangra and fusion music in the cloud, the licensed service also merges your current iTunes library into one collection. Users discover new music, then create unique playlists simply by: search, drag, drop. Combining the social discovery experience of music with unlimited, on-demand high quality streaming, KIXAR allows fans to listen to their personalized playlists on their computer and move to their smartphone seamlessly. KIXAR debuts this week and is currently available by invitation only.

Founded by Karm Singh, the app delivers a revolutionary experience to fans of South Asian music. “The core focus for KIXAR is to use our next generation technology to give users the best possible way to enjoy music, something which is an integral part of the South Asian experience. It is the first complete and powerful platform for South Asian music” said Singh.

KIXAR’s social media functionality stands out with one-click Facebook and Twitter integration. The social experience is enhanced as users can hit a like button within the app while listening to a song, which automatically shares it on their Facebook profile or tweets it. This brings together the discovery and sharing of new music into a single effortless action. “Social features such as Facebook & Twitter integration are really important because being able to instantly share what you’re listening to with your friends makes the music experience much richer.” commented Singh. KIXAR also gives users the option to access their playlists offline.

This week, KIXAR began offering their unique app selectively to users who sign-up for an invitation on http://www.kixar.com. The service is currently available for free and is expected to be made available to more users later this year.

At the mid-town location (39th street and 6th avenue in NYC) TKRC has introduced an assortment of beer and wine including a Happy Hour where the coveted rolls are a few bucks cheaper. From 4 to 6:30pm daily, enjoy $2 off when you purchase a beer and roll combo or select the weekly rotating special for $7. In the dog days of summer, nothing compares to a crisp cold beer and a spicy kati roll.

In Case You Didn’t Know: The Kati Roll Company (99 MacDougal Street, New York, NY 10012; 212.420.6517 | 49 W. 39th Street, New York, NY 10018; 212.730.4280) brings India’s beloved street snack to New York City with authentic wraps exploding with big and bold flavors. These savory rolls are made fresh-to-order, using parathas or rotis (Indian flatbreads) to contain an exciting and unusual assortment of meats, shrimp, vegetables and cheeses blended in a variety of spices. Started in 2002 as a modest restaurant on MacDougal Street, The Kati Roll Company is on the cusp of becoming the fastest growing and unique quick service restaurant in New York.

Rediff.com’s Aseem Chhabra witnessed the reflection of the struggle for equal marriage rights for gay and lesbians in New York city on Sunday where over hundred same-sex couples took their vows. Among the couples was an Indian American couple too.

Navin Dargani and Navin Manglani have been together as a couple for six years and last month the two held a commitment ceremony in California with family and friends.

But on Sunday, July 24, the two young men, both residents of New York City, lined up before 9 am at the marriage bureau on 100 Worth Street in Manhattan to get their relationship officially approved by the New York State.

They were able to get a license, a judicial waiver for the 24 hour waiting period and get married the same day.

“It’s nice to know that fellow New Yorkers respect our relationship and can honor our love,” Dargani said as he stood in the line with a couple of hundred people ahead and behind him. The two wore similar clothes–shorts (it has been miserably hot in city for the past few days), shirts and bow ties.

“I feel like it is the social validation of our relationship,” Manglani said about the reason they chose to get married.

“That’s meant a lot to us for many years, but to have that kind of a nod from the society elevates it to a different level and goes to show it is no different than any other relationship.”

Thirty days after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the law legalising same sex marriage, hundreds of couples gathered at different marriage bureaus in parts of the state.

The largest gathering — all very orderly, with a festive mood, was in New York City, where 659 couples picked up licenses and 484 wed at the marriage bureaus in all of the city’s five boroughs. The largest numbers of marriages were conducted in Manhattan — 293 in total.

We were too. Say hello to Jasbina Ahluwalia, the nation’s only South Asian-American matchmaker! Jasbina has the know-how and cultural sensitivity that has made her the foremost source for commitment-minded singles looking to get hitched.

Question
I am 34 and have been single for way too long. I would love to meet someone, but it seems that every time I do, the person doesn’t like me or ends up being unavailable. I usually have an easy time making friends, so of course, when I am not romantically interested in someone, that person ends up liking me. It’s very frustrating since I have no idea why this is happening. I was wondering, do you think it’s just human nature to want what you cannot have?

Answer:
Being 34 and single could just mean that you haven’t met the right person yet. However, if you are concerned about your dating patterns, then these issues are definitely worth exploring. When it comes to wanting someone you can’t have, there are many factors to consider, such as past baggage and self-esteem issues or fear of rejection, but the most common theory is that human beings crave a challenge and the thrill of the chase.

The giddiness in the beginning of a relationship, where everything is new and you get butterflies in your stomach every time you see that special person, can be attributed to feeling unsure of how things are going. This is the essence of the thrill of the chase: anything’s possible! And when the chase is over, there is a sense of accomplishment.

If this is, in fact, what you are doing, one way to avoid this behavior is to think about what you really want and why. The best way to figure this out is to do some honest soul searching. Ask yourself about the personal qualities you feel a life partner should have, keeping it compatible with your own values, personality, as well as short and long-term goals. Then think about the direction in which you would like your life to go over the next six months, one year and five years. Some of the things you might think about are family life, financial planning, career development and interests.

Perhaps you will find that the fact that you are only attracted to people who seem to be unavailable is not an issue of wanting what you can’t have. The root of your problem could be that you don’t have a clear idea of yourself and what you really want out of life. Either way, the answers you come up with are the things you should be aware of when you meet someone. If you begin thinking about these qualities on a more conscious level, you will open yourself up to dating people who are much more compatible with you!

Pree is fresh off the release of his debut album Me, Myself, and Pree and now brings his album to life with quality videos.

“‘Yaara’ is a song that is very personal to me. I wrote it in 2005 when I lost someone close to me in a car accident. The lyrics are a reflection of what I felt at the time and I hope my fans can feel the emotion.” Pree explains.

The video for “Yaara” has been directed and produced by Inner Vibe TV; Chintan Singh Anand has co-written the single. Pree Mayall’s first single “Akh Da Ishara” has received 16,000+ views on YouTube and continues to gain attention.

Born in Yuba City and raised in Sacramento, California, Pree started his music career at a young age. At a mere 7 years old, he joined the local school band and began his journey into the musical world.

Learning how to play the flute, sax, clarinet, trumpet, and drums, Pree turned his attention to Desi Music. In 2001, he went to India and brought back a Dhol; in 2005 Pree was crowned, “International Dhol Champion of the World,” by Toronto’s Bhangra Nation. Pree went on to play alongside artists such as Punjabi MC, Cheb I Sabbah, Talvin Singh, and others.
