As a contestant in Season Three of Project Runway, Malan Breton didn’t exactly win the reality show, but that didn’t stop this talented designer from launching his own collection under his name. His latest collection, Spring 2010, Malan found inspiration in India. Much of his collection, both men’s and women’s, found familiarity in lush fabrics and the voluminous draping of the sari. The show was presented with a dance performance by the Sa Dance Group and ended with a serenade by another reality star, Anoop Desai from American Idol, Season 8. Here Malan talks about his collection.
What caused you to find inspiration in India?
Malan: My adoration with India came from the stories my grandmother told me of her journeys there when I was a boy. This collection was truly inspired by my niece who was adopted in India and brought to America. Her family introduced me to many of the elements that were a part of my collection. I wanted the world to experience this beauty, so genius.
You are known for your shift dress and classic lines. What materials did you use in this collection?
Malan: I adapted many of my simple silhouettes to include elements of the Sari. This to me was very important in this collection. I think many designers have found such genius inspiration from India.
Can you tell us about the three-piece suits for men? What fabrics were used? What inspired the tighter silhouette?
Malan: The suiting for men was very inspired by the traditional men's wardrobe of India, the fabrics were rich silks in colors not so common to the market, but that were inspired by the theme.
Describe your ideal client? Male and Female? Malan: My ideal client is someone who wants to feel beautiful / handsome. Someone who is open to the experience of the best-made garments in the world, and someone who lives in the moment and likes clothing that expresses that spontaneity.
Which celebrities have you dressed? Who is your favorite? Who is your dream? Malan: I have dressed so many. I adore each of them for everything they have inspired in me. I think true artists are inspired by the people that surround them.
You are a multi-faceted man, a singer, dancer, talk show host, columnist and reality star. Of all the paths that you have taken including being a fashion designer, which is your most favorite? Malan: I love each facet of my life, everything inspires everything, if that makes sense. I am so blessed with the opportunity to express from all parts of my art.
