Imagine yourself drinking thick red table wine at a rickety table in a smoke-filled cafe in the back streets of Southern Mexico discussing departures and dispersement with your fellow migrantes and backdoor intellectuals. That exactly how you’ll feel when listening to Rupa and April Fishes latest release, Esta Mundo, on Cumbancha Records. From the elusive La Linea, to the French C’est Moi, the rousing Por La Frontera, and the global groove of Elephant, Rupa and the April Fishes have a sound that transcends borders and regions. Rupa’s raspy voice draws you in as her mastery of French, Spanish and English transports you to through the World of the Story. The April Fishes equally match her style playing instruments as varied as the pump organ, sousaphone, tabla, bansuri flute, saxophone, accordion, trumpet and clarinet.  Listeners should also keep an ear out for the sound of wineglasses and the ever-popular glockenspiel. Overall, the sound is deeply enjoyable and the lyrics are both haunting and political, a perfect combination for the smoky café’s of your hometown…just be careful not to get caught in any ensuing bar brawls.
