Bangles! Bangles! Bangles!

Songs have been written about them. Romances have been enacted over them. Marriage symbols sometimes even include them, but more often than not, bangles are that something extra that gives your look a special touch.

As for how bangles fashion is dictated, experts Ravi Gupta of Kanha Collections, NJ and Anubha Varma, an independent jewelery consultant based in Virginia, credit Bollywood and Indian television serials for sparking out trends at an increasingly rapid pace. With  the Festival Season popping around the corner, bangles are high on the accessories list. Let the occasion you're attending tell you which bangles to wear.

Durga Pooja

If you’re planning on attending Durga pooja in the Bengali style, glass bangles or lac bangles with mirror work on them adds depth to your prayers.

Garba

Dancing to dandiyas--Gujarati style--is a perfect (and safe) occasion to wear metal bangles found in all different colors and widths. Metal bangles are generally more practical because they don't break as easily even with all that stick swinging and coordinated dance steps.

Diwali

With all of the candles and lamps aflickering, thicker bangles adorned with mirrors is the ideal way to have all of those lights dancing off of you. Match up the colors as contrasting accents to your outfit color for a more stylized feel.
According to Gupta and Varma, standard upscale Diwali wear, by far, are Victorian bangles. Depending on the level of craftsmanship and design, these could go anywhere from $50/pair to $700 plus, but the ornate work is well worth the price.

Eid

For Eid open houses and parties, metal stone-studded bangles, largely with a silver or gold-colored bases, will carry you seamlessly from day into night. Add more intense drama by sporting meenakari work with stones or the ever-classic, Navratan (nine gems) designs on gold-plated silver bangles. Prices start between $10-25/pair on the lower range and up to $150-200/pair on the high end.

With all of the upcoming events, update your bangle collection by adding in some eye-catching thick anchor bangles and filling in the spaces with your older collections. Varma recommends alternating new vibrant colors on a base of all gold, silver or oxidized bangles. She also recommends base colors of reds, blacks, beiges and navy blues, but in styles adorned with multi-colored hanging beads, Benaras, lac, mirror work or Hyderabadi Navratan for less-than-ordinary wrist wear.
